My son is 6 and was diagnosed with dyslexia dec '11, so very recently. It had already had a big impact on his education. He wasn't anywhere near his level for writing. They start school here at 3 and his writing level was not much better than a 4 y/o. He'd manage to write one sentence a week at school and that is no exageration. He was literally just sitting there all day doing nothing when there rest of the children were writing and occasionally they'd have the head come in and tell him off. I can only imagine how awful it was. It came to the point where even though he wasn't complaining i could see how painful it was getting him to write as i'd be sitting helping him with his homework. I asked for him to be tested and because he has an above average verbal skills and was able to participate fully in all other aspects of school they agreed. It was the best thing for him. He has made amazing progress since he was assessed. Obviously we've had to put a lot more effort in to helping him, not just to do the work but to make it more fun for him but it has been worth it. He couldn't write the alphabet at the beginning of december, not only were the letter placements a problem but he also had problems with inverted letters and mixed case letters. Now he can recite the alphabet in order and write it all in lower case. Still some inverted letters but loads better. That is just over a month. I could go on but i've gone on long enough. The sooner you get help the sooner you can work on new strategies to help him. He has other issues related to dyslexia that we are continuing to work on but he is doing so well now he is even picking up books to look at when i'm not telling him too.
