Author: Dr. Deborah Reed
Subject: Deborah took the conch-shaped instrument with some trepidation...
In reply to: 1ne 's message, "Doctor Reed, we mean no one any harm." on 12:05:10 07/24/01 Tue

A black bar curved outward from the center of it, and she realized she could mount it, somewhat awkwardly across her skull. She eyed the 1ne with some mistrust, but Ali's eyes showed no fear, and Deb honestly couldn't sense any trace of that emotion in her. The mech Steele was another matter, but she put trigger-happy officers from her mind as she put on the device.

The room changed immediately for her. Every color was enhanced, every object that much more vibrant. She wondered if others could see the images forming on the walls, or feel the sensations she was feeling. She nearly wept when she realzied the 1ne had actually captured Ali's memories of her own birth, the untainted joy of welcoming light....and life. She could not restrian the tears when the tragic loss of Ali's mother was seen as Ali herself saw it. The image of some dark, hairy silhouette standing between Ali and the WR@ in the ducts gave her pause...perhaps her claims of being protected by a 'teddy bear' had merit? Whatever that thing was, it wasn't Ali's stuffed animal, that much was for certain.

The device finished with the murder of Officer McCormick, seen as Ali had seen it from the ducts, and showing it to Deb for the first time. As horrible as she felt when Justin Grey ran into the medlabs cradling the young girl whose father had just been fried to a crisp by Scaleblade, this was ten times worse. Unable to take any more, she willed the device away telekinetically and dropped to her knees, pulling Ali close once more. Before discarding the device she had felt one last sensation, the undying love Ali had for the stranger and his vessel. Who were they really, to inspire such raw emotion in the young girl? Deb still had doubts, but slowly they were being eroded, even as a voice within howled in protest...

Deb was no telepath, no empath, but sometimes, just sometimes, she got something from a person. A feeling. A notion. An intuition. It all paled to the overwhelming sensation the device of the 1ne presented to her; she could not understand how Ali felt any more than if she WAS Ali....and in the process very nearly lost herself. Her inner reason was battling with her(Ali's?) emotions(love?) now, and she still needed answers.

"I..I've never felt anything like that...seen technology that could...I mean we've done some work with neural nets and relays but...

Ali believes you love her, that you would die for her. Part of me isn't sure, but part of me...who are you? Where did you come from?

Please..I....I want to..need to...understand.

Help me undersatnd."
