Subject: It depends on what you are looking for - O'Shea does solos and teams at Oireachtas and does a lot of local performances. Corda Mor seems to focus more on solo competitions, doesn't do teams and doesn't perform as much. O'Shea has the added bonus of music instruction on site if that is of interest.

They have different teaching styles, either of which may or may not work well for your dancer. We attend a different local school, but we have made friends with dance families from other schools and our school has had transfers from both.

Corda Mor is primarily a competition school and I think there is more pressure to advance, that has worked for some that we know but not for others. When it comes to solo costumes the TCRG is heavily involved in deciding when the dancer gets a different costume and what they will get.

O'Shea has more opportunities to dance outside of solo competition with their ceili teams and the shows they do through out the year. They have an active parent association that hosts most of our local feiseanna.

I don't know what your initial criteria was in narrowing down the schools, but I would keep an open mind about the other local schools, one may be a better fit for your dancer and their goals. I would recommend observing a class at different schools to give you an idea of what the atmosphere is like, everyone will probably be on their best behavior when you are there, but it should give you a good idea of what you are getting into.

In June we have the NMA Championship and 10,000 lakes feis weekend, if you are able to attend you could see the schools in action and have a chance to talk to people in person. Another opportunity to see the local schools and talk to dance families is during Irish Fair in August, although I don't think that Corda Mor participated the last couple of years.

I hope you find a good fit for your dancer, and don't be afraid to change schools to find one that fits if the first one you choose doesn't.

Thank you for your responses. The actual move is in a month and we’ve connected with a school.
