Subject: "Bravo, Mr. Rotor, bra-vo..."
In reply to: Rotor 's message, ""I guess I oughtta start with the first episode..."" on 00:24:08 08/08/01 Wed

The rotund attorney clapped loudly and hollowly.

"That was a VERY impressive display just now, mis-ter Rotor."
"Display nuthin'; I just told it like it wa--"
"I'm sorry, did I ask a question? I must have for you to be speaking..."
"Are you TRYING to provoke me?!"
"Are you easily provoked?"
"I...no, no I am not."
"Of course not..." Barristro said, turning his back on Rotor and facing the jury, "...you just like teleporting engines out on whim. Or do you hate your prisoners?"
"What?! You're twisting things. I might hate what those scumbots in the brig do..."
"'Do', mis-ter Rotor? Explain. Whatever happened to 'innocent until proven guilty'? How are you an expert on what your guests have done?"
"I saw what the defendant did firsthand, how's that for being an expert?"
"Don't be smart with me. What exactly DID Dinotron do since you bring it up?"
"I told you before; he busted in, got past security and tried to break Scaleblade out. He damn near succeeded too!"
"Arrogance is so ugly."
"And how's THAT a question?"

Barristro winked at the jury before turning to face Rotor again.

"I was getting to that, but I see you have little patience. What I was going to ask was if your defenses in the brig are as impenetrable as you like to believe?"
"You live on this Starbase too so you better hope 'my' defenses are even better'n I say."
"Yes...so there was no way anything like the WR@ could have gotten in then, yes?"
"No...I mean yes...I mean they did, but what does that..."
"It means that no defense is impenetrable. It means that our last line of defense are the men and machines we put our trust in. You, Lieutenant Rotor. You and your officers. Defenses fail and had very recently failed. Dinotron's break-in was nothing miraculous, nor any sign of incalculable threat. He cut through the defenses because they were weak. You overreacted because YOU were wea--"

Masonite's cries of "OBJECTION! That is speculation!" were recognized and accepted by Nores, but of course the jury had already heard.

"Apologies to my esteemed colleague and to the witness, as well as yourself your honor. I will rephrase.
Is it possible Dinotron broke in more easily because of damage?"

"Yes, I suppose it is, but we doublechecked--"
"You said Dinotron was an 'omnileech'? Can you explain that ludicrous notion?"
"Well, I heard someone say he could drain energy from almost anything and--"
"I apologize, my hearing isn't so good. Did you say you 'heard' this information?"
"Well yeah, folks were talking before the trial and--"
"So, as I understand it, up until a few hours ago this would have been new information to you?"
"Yes, but--"
"When you removed his engine, all you knew was that he was breaking into another prisoner's cell with the intention of freeing her."
"Yes."
"Thank you, your honor, no further questions."

As Barristo took his seat Rotor stepped down as well, staring hard at the Sharkticon attorney as he passed by. Barristro did not return the angry glare; he was intent on the faces in the jury box. As deadly a portrait had been painted of Dinotron, what mattered now was Rotor's actions based on the knowledge he possessed at the time. Barristro had subtly planted the seeds of doubt, but would it be enough?
