Author: Lieutenant Gabriel Michaels
Subject: The wind was particularly biting today...

...as Gabe Michaels trudged across the snow, his tattered SBR flightsuit providing little protection from the cold, he wondered why no one had come back for him yet. True, the crew of the SP Boardhopper was massive, and divided into many divisions, each of whom's head reported to yet another head until the pyramid reached Ferris Magnum, but SOMEONE should have done a head count by now. The confusion of the battle with the TLA and their massive robotic flagship the Nova*Beacon certainly could have accounted for his absence not being noticed. Then there WAS that bizarre structure he and the others who had come planetside had discovered, the one in which he'd used as shelter the last few months. Nothing can be quite so distracting to an already scattered crew than a monkey-head popping up on a giant screen before an entire facility explodes.

Gabe winced at this last recollection. His old shoulder injury, incurred when a slab of metal fell on him, separating him from the others in the blast, seemed to flare in response to the memory. Without proper medical treatment, he realized he might always have the occasional twinge. A weakness. Gabe winced again at THIS thought, knowing no doubt his rival Lt. Winston might use it as an edge. Both had their eyes on the same promotions, ever since Rugby Corps, and both dreamed of being Ferris Magnum someday.

"Looks like you'll win this one, huh?" he said aloud, a habit that ineveitably became more and more regular since he was marooned. Suspiciously, he wondered who if anyone had recieved the distress signal he'd sent out using cobbled together parts of wreckage. He would've bet anything that Winston had intercepted the message and left him for dead. Paranoia or not, Gabe had no idea that Winston was several weeks dead, and that his old ship was no more, consumed in a battle against a superphysical race of fear-hungry beings known only as WR@. That would have in all likelihood have been his LAST guess, if guess that at all he did.

"OOOF!" Gabe stumbled forward suddenly, tripping over somehting in the snow. Cursing, he rolled onto his back and stared up at the lights in the sky. he remained transfixed on them for long moments, the lights reminding him of stories his great grandfather told him of something called the 'aurora borealis'. Gabe often watched this phenomena, and so when the sky seemed to flicker and go black for a second, he was understandably distressed.

"What now, huh? Don't tell me my retinas're freezing or something..." Gabe checked his chronometer to find it had stopped, several hours AHEAD of the last time he'd checked. "Surprised the damn thing worked THIS long." he muttered, dusting off snow futilely as he crawled over to inspect a rectangular chunk of riveted metal, a peice of the debris over which he'd no doubt tripped. He read the strange inscription aloud with wonder...

"I...Ice Computer..?! What the heck does THAT mean?" Prying it loose, he carried it back with him to his shelter....
