Moving faster than any of them were prepared for, Rana was suddenly on his knees, Chris's wound calf in his hands. Grey and Mercado moved forward as the wizard spoke aloud:

"Presso voi, l'potenza di trion,
senza, la volontà guidare,
dalle vostre proprie energie è guarita!"


Justin Grey put up his forearm, to block the flash of energy before him. Mercado's visor automatically compensated, but the man within still halted when Grey did. Rana arose.

"My intentions are both real and just, and if I have not been misled, so is my cause. My actions are both proof of my desired benevolence and your own place in the deck. Stand, Christopher Braddock, and tell me again how I must prove myself to you."

Chris tentatively let go of the chair on which he was bracing himself. Gingerly he took one step forward, then another, finally attempting a hop. Though he slipped in the slush around them he managed to regain his balance before falling. He began to laugh uncontrollably, and grinned at the others. But it was Justin Grey whose expression Rana watched, Justin's features which still betrayed his dislike and distrust of the Manarian wizard. He was not part of this in any of the futures Rana had glimpsed back on the NOVA*Beacon, but he was beginning to appear in some of them now. Though his prescence here was sheer accident, Rana and Justin's fates were now intertwined. There was not a single scenario his window into the future presented him that did not end in death for one or the other on the road to Dah'li. Not one.

Rana wept a bitter tear, for himself or for Justin, but the freezing winds laid claim to it long before it reached the ground...
