Subject: Why do we say blessings?

God is the source of all blessing and praise. When we bless God, we are merely acknowledging what is already in existence even restating the obvious about our creator

Do the items we say blessings about need our blessing?

No. In fact all things have already been "blessed" when God called them into existence. Any human words to them would seem trite in comparison to this.

If neither God nor the items about which we say blessings need the blessings, why do we do it?

I suggest that the reason is that we do it for ourselves. Saying the blessing makes us take notice of the item, and the action of our Creator to place this item in our life.

Not saying the blessing does not cause the item to cease to exist. In fact it is a subject of discourse why so many seemingly ungrateful people have so much.

What is the point in taking notice of the item?

We so often walk through our lives without taking notice of most of the things we encounter. Getting in the habit of saying blessings at every possible time brings things we may not have noticed into focus. So in a real sense our saying blessings, brings us the "blessing" itself. For without taking notice of it, it is as if we never received the blessing.
