I think the consensus is that stories were borrowed from other cultures, because monotheism really does not allow for them. This is one of the explanations for the exclusion of many of the books from the Jewish canon. The books left out had more mention of these types of creatures so they were considered less "Jewish" or less true to "One God" than the other books.
