Finally something I CAN answer..phew! ok...In B5 the regent and later Londo, had an invisible creature attached to them called a 'keeper.' It controlled their actions unless they were drunk or otherwise incapacitated. The 'keeper' was an agent of the Shadows...who symbolised chaos.

Ok..so for Spike something is controlling his actions, maybe always has been? Or just when he got the soul? If they are driving towards chaos they have found the perfect host!

Is that enough explanation? Makes me worry enough about Spike.
