Her heart actually thudded in her ears as she reached for the goodnatured child who coo'd at her a bit as she slid her hands behind his back and under his legs to lift him out of the carrier and to her chest easily, almost naturally. She felt a bursting of pride and then a bit of melancholy that Andre wasn't there to experience her first step.
