• Donna opened the door and flashed a friendly smile at Aislinn "Hey! I thought you guys were never gonna get back- it'll be dark by the time we get there!" • When Donna spoke, it felt like someone had dropped an anvil into her stomach that brought it all the way down to her toes and she swallowed several times, trying to get the thick, dry feeling of her tongue out of her mouth. A crease of worry presented itself on her brow and she twisted her car keys between her fingers. "Uhm... he's not here?" She tried her hardest for a smile - surely he'd just stopped at a store or gotten way laid talking to a friend. "Because he was supposed to be at my place two hours ago, and he never showed up.." • Donna frowned softly, concern and alarm creasing her face "He left to pick you up hours ago... i figured you guys had gone shopping or gotten sidetracked or something... have you called his cell?" • She shook her head. "No answer." She felt like she was jumping the gun by panicking, but she had a horrible feeling in the pit of her stomach. She pressed her lips together, her mind scanning over the possible places he could be. "Do you think we should call the surf shop? And the restaurant?" She listed off a few other places that she had learned he liked to haunt - getting out her own phone to dial some of the numbers she had programmed into her speed dial. • Donna nodded quickly in agreement "And I'll call the hospital.... just incase" She added, upon seeing Aislinns reaction to that. • She swallowed heavily again and sat herself down on the couch, fighting back alarmed tears as she dialed some of their familiar spots only to find that he hadn't been seen nor heard of since the day before - of course, because he had been packing all day today in preparation for their trip. • Donna hung up the phone after a few minutes, having spoken to a nurse. She looked to Aislin with a soft, concerned frown, setting down the receiver "He's at the hospital... he had a car crash... they're operating on him now..." • Again, she felt like she'd found a lump in her throat that she couldn't swallow and so swallowed and swallowed again, her eyes drifting to Aaron, fast asleep in his car seat, completely oblivious to what was going on. She hit the disconnect button on the cell phone mid conversation with the owner of their favorite bistro by the water and then rose, a bit shakily, even though it felt like her limbs were lead. • She looked to the sleeping boy and then back to Donna. She was not the sort of person who always needed support, truly, but surgery... an accident... it was a bit much for her to handle on her own. "I think you should come... I need you there." She had an easy casual friendship with the babysitter - she was a life saver in many aspects of her relationship with Andre. She wasn't sure what she hoped to accomplish from going directly to the hospital - she wasn't family, they may not even tell her the prognosis, but she had to do something with herself. • Donna swallowed softly and nodded, picking up the baby's carrier (with him asleep in it) and the diaper bag, waiting for Aislinn to lead the way. // Andre was just coming out of surgery when they arrived. His car had been hit side on by a car who'd skipped the red lights and ploughed right into him, sending Andre's care into the path of other traffic and leading to serious internal bleeding and a brain hemorrhage. • She approached the reception area with what felt like a bowling ball in her stomach and spent some time convincing them that she was permitted to be there - finally insisting that she was, indeed, married to Andre, this was their child, and she had every right to be with him. It was a lie that would have taken her a considerable amount of guts and bravery under any other circumstance to come up with but it came out surprisingly easy, sliding over her tongue - and believable enough. She waited impatiently to be allowed to enter the recovery room where he lay, leaving Donna and the baby, who she gave a convincing kiss on the forehead, in the waiting room. • Donna bit her tongue as Ais spoke tot he nurses, smiling sadly at the nurse when she looked to her- playing along as nanny- which she supposed she was. She sat down in the chairs with Aaron to wait for ais to come back out. Andre was still out, he hadn;t woken up yet and it would probably be a little while before he did- he was still under sedation. His head had been shaven and a bandage wrapped around it from his brain sergary, and his torso was dressed and covered by the hospital gown. His normally golden skin looked pale and he he looked a lot more frail than the strong, burly surfer guy he was. He had an oxygen mask on and wires in and out of him, attatched to an ICU. • She had gotten a short briefing from the doctor, but not a lot as the doctor had understood that she was most concerned with seeing him. She paused in the doorway, faultering a bit, before she went to his bedside, a frown etched across her pretty features as she took in the sight of him, looking so lifeless save for the slow rise of his chest and the beeping of the heart monitor that told her his heart was beating. She pulled one of the visitor's chairs so close to the bed that her knees were jammed between the chair and the bedframe and tentatively reached out to touch his hand - he was littered in bruises, he looked terrible, and it was almost frightening. • It was an hour or so later when the sedatives started to wear off, his eyelids beginning to flutter a little before they opened, a gruff sound muffled by the oxygen mask he wore. He was still being drip-fed pain meds so he didn;t feel too awful, but his head was very cloudy and he was drowsey and not quite lucid. His blue eyes found her after a moment or two , looking at her for a long moment before a faint smile tugged at his lips, murmering a little behind the mask "Sorry.... im...late..." • She had sat for that hour, with her knees against his bed, one of her hands finally, decisively taking hold the hand closest to her, closing her fingers around his as though she was the only thing keeping him in this world - and so she'd sat, watching his face for any flicker of life. She hadn't even gone out to tell Donna what was going on, but had spent that hour silently urging him to wake up, to make it through. Her eyes welled with tears when she heard him speak and a sad smile crossed her features, wrinkling her eyes and pushing the tears out of them down her cheeks. "Oh baby... it's okay... • He had used his initiative and gathered that he was in a hospital, and he remembered being hit byt he guy that ran the lights, remembered swearing at him and trying to speed past him but he hadn't made it- he remembered the blow to the car that seemed to send the whole world sidewards, but he didn;t remember anymore than that. He smiled a little at her sobbing, not that he found it amusing- but more that he found it touching "Didn;t I promise you a fun weekend?" He murmered, though a lot of it was lost behind the mask. He was starting to become a little more aware of himself now.... he could feel his banging head and a pain in his stomach and his back and neck hurt, but he couldn;t feel any further down then that, but he was doing his best to ignore that, not wanting to be a drama queen at all. • The sad smile continued as he spoke again, and she shook her head. "There's all sorts of time for fun weekends later on." Her smile grew a bit braver. "How do you feel? You were in surgery for a few hours... they say you're lucky to be alive. This is the intensive care unit - the lies I had to tell to be able to see you just now would make your hair curl." She teased a little bit and gave his hand a squeeze, the heavy weight she'd had in her gut slowly dissolving as she watched his eyes move, his chest rise, his fingers move. • He felt her fingers in his and mentally breathed a sigh of relief, wrapping his hand around hers. He laughed a little as she told him about her lying to see him, his blue eyes playing on hers but he couldn't quite find the strength to say to much but did manage to crack another joke "Great... never better..." He smiled a little before closing his eyes a moment "Aaron?" He asked- want9ing to know what was going on with his baby boy. • She never felt so good about their relationship as she did when she felt him squeeze her fingers back. She could read signs of pain in his features but maybe she was mentally blocking them out - being on oxygen wasn't exactly a precursor to great conversation - she knew she was probably pushing it considering he had just woken up but she needed the reassurance he was providing. "Donna is outside with him. They didn't want to let him into this wing at all... none of us. I told them I was his mother and that was your baby... I'll look after him." • His blue eyes lingered on her as she spoke, smile creases appearing around them as she told him what she'd said, amused but also touched. it meant a lot to him that she would take him on when he;d always told her she didnt have to be responsible to him. He nodded a touch as she told him she'd look after him, nodding gratefully before he let his eyes slide closed, just resting them- not sleeping, squeezing her fingers as he took int he oxygen, letting his strength build up a little. • She could feel his approval and pride in her words and it built her up. She wanted more than anything to run her hands all over his body, make sure every peice was there, make sure that he'd be able to get up and walk and surf and laugh and be her boyfriend again, but she refrained, her strength and confidence building up for his long journey ahead. She finally resorted to leaning ahead and kissing his cheek chastely, her fingers trailing over his cheek as her lips left it - that part of him was okay. • He smiled a toch as she kissed him, his blue eyes flickering open to her breifly, murming a "Thank you" Before he concentrated on just breathing through the pain, closing his eyes once more. • She looked down at him for a moment from her close proximity - the stubble on his head from where it had been shaved and the little cuts and bruises that marred his face and shook her head, three words caught in her throat - it was an instance like this that made you realize what was important, and this was what was important. She cleared her throat a bit and gave him another kiss. "I'll look after things, I promise. You just worry about healing." She straightened and gave his fingers a squeeze, noting the nurse at the door who was ushering her out - she knew she had been fortunately overlooked for the last hour and was well past her welcome here. • Donna stood up as she reappeared- it was like two hours since Ais had dissappeared and Dinna had been getting very worried- and Aaron didn;t like the hospital- he was fretting and getting grumpy. Her gaze flickered over Aislinn's face, trying to read her as she hitched the diaper bag up on her shoulder "What happened? His he going to alright?" She was worried for Aaron- and also for Andre- he was a good employer and a genuinly nice guy- but she;d be heartbroken for Aaron if he had to grow up an orphan. (NT) -- Andre, 13:43:06 02/07/07 Wed
• The furrows of concern on her brow had loosened some since she'd gone into the room - they weren't gone but she certainly wasn't as worried as she had been. She'd spoken briefly to the nurse about his condition and while they were optomistic, the nurse assured her that it would be a long road ahead. "He was awake.. and talked to me for a few minutes... the nurse said they think he'll be okay eventually, but it will be a while before he's out." She peered at the child for a moment, feeling the stirrings of what she had previously been sure she was meant to be feeling but hadn't - it was foreign but not unwelcome. "We should take him home." • Donna nodded and reached for the carried, hooking it on her arm and the diaper bag on the other, following Aislinn out to her car and getting his car seat strapped into the back while she climbed into the front with Ais, letting out a sigh- at least he was alive- they should be thankful for hat- but she had no idea what was to happen to Aaron in the mean time- Donna could still babysit of course but she normally only watched him through the day or an off evening or so. • The ride home was not silent - without coming clean about her intentions, Aislinn prodded, asking questions like how often Aaron had to be laid down to nap during the day and how many times a day he was fed, how many days between baths, and all the sorts of things she would need to know, meticulously collecting and filing away the information for the hard days to come. It would get easier, she was sure, and she knew she'd still call Donna to come and watch him as often as she was able to, but she knew that while the girl was practically their nanny, she had other parts of her life to tend to. When they pulled back into the apartment complex, she let them in with her keys and flicked on a couple of lights. "Can you show me how to hold him?" (NT) -- Ais, 13:54:56 02/07/07 Wed
• Donna eyes her curiously for the first few questions- but she soon figured out why she was asking, and she couldnt help but smile a little, finding it very touching that she was going to do this for Andre- it was a big step for her, Donna could tell. She answered all her questions nonchalently though, not making a big deal out of it. Donna had had younger siblings and cousins and she'd been baby sitting since she was about thirteen, but it was pretty obvious that Ais had always had better things to do. "Yeah.... but you'll probably find it pretty natural... He's four months now so he can hold his head up on his own- do you dont have to be so worried about supporting his head like you would when he was new born... " She unstrapped him from the carrier and motioned for Ais to pick him out of it herself, showing her the easiest and most natural way to hold him, watching her reaction as she took him (NT) -- Donna, 14:05:12 02/07/07 Wed
• Her heart actually thudded in her ears as she reached for the goodnatured child who coo'd at her a bit as she slid her hands behind his back and under his legs to lift him out of the carrier and to her chest easily, almost naturally. She felt a bursting of pride and then a bit of melancholy that Andre wasn't there to experience her first step. Aaron supported himself with his elbows against Aislinn's chest, looking at her with clear blue eyes and she offered him a smile back. "This isn't too bad, now, is it? • Donna laughed a little at that- just gently- not mockingly, beaming with pride as Aislinn took this first important step "He knows you... " She murmered, Aadon wasn;t normally so content with people he didn;t know- but he was a very goodnatured baby. Donna figured it was impossible to drop a baby unless you actually intended to- it was like... built into your brain or something. She filled her in on a few more things, little bits of 'solids' that he was beginning to eat- like a little baby rice mixed in with his rice and such "He's a pretty good sleeper too... are you going to move in here?" • She looked over at the girl, the concern still easing out of her face - she guessed that this was just what holding a baby did - relaxed you, calmed you - or that seemed to be what it was doing for her anyways. She offered a smile to Donna. "Well, I'll bring my stuff in until Andre doesn't need me here anymore anyways... even after he's out, I'm not sure how well he'll do... so I guess I'll be here temporarily anyways... and I'll call you often, I am sure." She could just imagine now, calling Donna at three am because she'd spent a night tossing and turning, trying to remember what color undershirt Aaron needed to wear. • Donna grinned a little and nodded, pointing to the kitchen "My cell number is on the fridge... and the milk instructions are on the container... diapers are int he third drawer down in his changing table unit along with everything else you'll need... oneses are in the top drawer of his chest of drawers... and I'll see you tomorrow morning." She would at least drop in and see how she'd made it through the night. She picked up her travel bag and her purse and headed for the door "And you look really great with him, by the way." • Her eyes widened with a brief moment of panic as Donna exited the apartment, easy as that - obviously eager to go home, it had been a stressful day. She sighed a bit and looked down at the baby, a hand still on his back carefully. "So what do you think bud? It's just you and me." The maternal care she felt for him right then was almost enough to bring tears to his eyes. "We're gonna be great friends by the time your daddy is able to come home - he'll be really pleased." • The baby garbled at her a little, his pudgy little hand curled into her long hair as he watched her insistantly for a good while, twisting his little mouth into all kinds of shapes, blissfully unaware of what was going on, but content to be entertained by the familiar face.
