I was wrong.

Although I switched my vote for Mike's Oscar pool. I decided that LotR would sweep the field, so I voted a nearly straight party ticket. The only two I got wrong were where I deviated from this approach, with Best Song (I theorized that Sting would win because his albums are in all the voters' car CD players) and Adapted Screenplay (the buzz for "Mystic River" was fierce out here). This is an example of outwitting myself, because I know better: the nature of a sweep is that it truly does sweep everything in its path.

On the other hand, I actually managed to correctly guess Feature and Short Animated and Documentary. How this happened, I don't know.

I think my final tally was all but two or three correct picks. That'll never happen again.

Based on last night, I'm now willing to say that a fantasy genre movie can win Best Picture, provided it's part of a series that grosses $3 billion. Short of that, I'm still not so sure. (However, an entire generation having grown up post-Star Wars, I'll concede it's more of a possibility than in the past.)

I still smile when I remember watching award after award go to Return of the King. My only disappointment is that Sean Astin didn't get nominated for Best Supporting Actor. He was outstanding as Sam, and the heart of the third film.

What I want to know is, when did they decide to split up the awards no one cares about? Documentaries, short animated, foreign language, and lifetime achievement used to be grouped together. This allowed me a nice half hour where I could take a shower and get ready for bed. Last night, I had to sit through the whole show - kind of a snoozer in the middle parts.
