By far, the movie from this year that I enjoyed the most, that affected me most deeply, and that I'm sure I'll watch many times with increased affection over the years, is "Lost in Translation." A grand romance, an insightful character study of two people, an amusing travelogue of Tokyo, and an almost shockingly grown-up work that never lost faith in the audience's intelligence.

I also enjoyed "Master and Commander" (far more than I expected, in fact, given my less-than-fondness for Russell Crowe, "L.A. Confidential" aside), "School of Rock," "Finding Nemo," "Winged Migration," and "A Mighty Wind."

Unlike every single human being on planet Earth, other than Rosemary, I'd rather be hit in the face with a cast iron skillet than ever suffer through "Bend It Like Beckham" again. God, how I loathed that movie.

I'd still like to see "Elf," "Bad Santa," and "Love, Actually."

I don't really want to see "Mystic River," "Cold Mountain," and, most especially, "The Last Samurai." (I'd be interested in seeing "The Shakiest Samurai in the West," starring Don Knotts, though.)

Perhaps the most memorable, and definitely the weirdest, sight I saw on film this year was Michael Landon singing a soul song in his role as guest host of "Hullabaloo," a mid-Sixties prime time rock show that my best friend in Ohio bought on DVD at e-Bay. And Little Joe wasn't half-bad. Well, OK - he WAS half-bad, but that means he was also half-good. In the world of soul music, unfortunately, that also meant he was half-assed. But he wasn't the shriek-inducing embarrassment I would have predicted. Who knows - if only he'd been given a little encouragement, his career in music might have taken off. Meaning we never would have suffered through "Little House on the Prairie" or "Highway to Heaven" or that made-for-TV movie about his own childhood as a bedwetter. I mean, if Lorne Greene could have a #1 with "Ringo," why not Michael Landon with "Little Latin Lupe Lu"?

'Master & Commander' was OK, but I like a little less brain activity in my ocean-battle epics.

You won't catch me watching 'Elf' even with YOUR eyes. I detest Will Ferrell's performances. The man is not funny.

I would also pay good $ to see 'The Shakiest Samurai in the West.'
