Subject: GG's Weird and Wacky Question of the Day...

So, I've been wrapping Christmas presents, since I've finished shopping for my family in the States. Therefore I've been listening to Christmas music. What's your favorite Christmas Carol? When do you like to start getting ready for Christmas?

I ache when I hear it, but it's the best kind of ache. Also, Do You Hear What I Hear.

We start decorating for Christmas the day after Thanksgiving. I usually get my shopping done the weekend before the holiday. The baking takes place the week before also. It is such a busy time.

I got to the bowling alley last night and one of the full-time X-mas stations was on the radio. I gave them $1 to change the station ANYTHING else.

My favorite traditional hymns are "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" and "God Rest Ye, Merry Gentlemen." Among the modern songs, everything that I put on my "Merry Christmas, Baby" collection. I like the funny, cock-eyed songs.

Of course, I have to admit to a certain fondness for my own work on the subject, "Christmas in L.A."

I start listening to Christmas music and doing related chores after I get home from Thanksgiving in Ohio. Until then, I switch the TV or radio any time a Christmas ad or song comes on, because it cheapens the meaning of the season.

[> there is a radio station war of christmas music here... -- shk24, 15:47:19 11/20/03 Thu (208.17.34.25)

2 stations have been playing non-stop christmas music since last week, it kills me...start the friggin' day after thanksgiving and let me enjoy my personal favorite holiday(food, football and beer - what could be better than that?)

my all time favorite is "blue christmas" from elvis, i also like "rockin' around the christmas tree" and my favorite modern one is the waitresses "christmas wrappings".

as far as the more traditional songs go i would have to say "i'll be home for christmas" stands out for me. i believe it was either wolfie or angharad who once posted the story of and the original version of "i'll be home for christmas" which if i recall had a far different intent than the popular version. if you wouldn't mind reprinting it again along with the story, i would appreciate seeing it again. i didn't save it and i only have a slight recollection of it...

[> [> Similar song, slightly different, though. -- wwolfe, 16:20:04 11/20/03 Thu (161.149.63.100)

It's "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas."

Which I left off my list of favorite modern songs, now that I think of it.

The original last verse goes:

"Someday soon, we all may be together
If the fates allow
Until then, we'll have to muddle through somehow
So have yourself a merry little Christmas now"

The uncertainty of whether the singer would be reunited with friends and family reflected the similar uncertainty faced by everyone during World War II, which is when this song was written, for the movie "Meet Me in St. Louis," where it was sung by Judy Garland.

Some years later, Bing Crosby recorded his version of the song, at which time he took it upon himself to de-gut the song by changing the lyrics of the last verse to:

"Through the years, we all will be together
If the fates allow
Hang a shining star upon the highest bow
And have yourself a merry little Christmas now"

The first two lines eliminate much of the doubt and fear that was conveyed in the original first two lines. The revised last two lines are essentially a pretty sentiment with no deeper emotion, whereas the original last two lines are a simple, eloquent expression of the human fallibility that we often feel with special keenness at certain moments around Christmas. Sadly, almost no one plays the orignal lyrics anymore, so most people don't know the song's real, and much more moving, meaning.

It's good to see you here, Paul. I hope life is treating you and your family well.

That's a big difference.

Thanks for posting this.

I don't think I've ever heard the second version. Odd, because "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" is probably my favorite of the Christmas Carols, I would have thought I'd have heard both.

"have yourself a merry little christmas" is another of my favorites. it is amazing how changing the verse just slightly can really affect the message of the song...

on that same note, i recall seeing a vh 1 show(i think it was one hit wonders) where katrina from katrina and the waves said that originally their hit "walking on sunshine" was actually a sad song about a girl who was waiting around for a love that wasn't coming back. but their producer convinced them that if they made it an upbeat, happy tune it would be hit. obviously he was right but i would love to have heard how it was originally done...

thanks for asking about me and the family. we are all well, this is just one of those crazy times with work, school, sports etc so i can drop in and catch up but i haven't been a very good poster lately.

have a great thanksgiving bill, i assume you'll be home in ohio for the holidays. big game for the buckeyes this weekend!

I like the Coventry Carol. And I Saw Three Ships.

And The Waitresses. And Elvis Costello's St. Stephen's Day Murders. And Vince Guaraldi.

I have a tough time listening to Silent Night. I don't dislike it, but it makes me very homesick.

And I hold off on music and decorating until after Thanksgiving.

It's definitely not Christmas until I play my "Charlie Brown Christmas" album with Vince Guaraldi's music. That is such a perfect expression of the season.

I'll think of you the next time I hear "Silent Night."

[> So many favorites... -- Maye, 19:09:21 11/20/03 Thu (66.188.131.119)

Top 5:

1) Ave Maria, which I suppose isn't technically a Christmas carol, but is simply a beautiful song.

2) Oh Holy Night

3) My Grown Up Christmas List (only the version as sung by Amy Grant)

4) The Night Before Christmas (see above, re: Amy Grant version. Seriously, if any of you are looking for a great Christmas album, go find her first Christmas album. I'm not a big Amy Grant fan generally, but that album puts me right in the Christmas spirit after the first 3 seconds of the first track!)

5) Carol of the Bells (Instrumental)

1. O Holy Night
2. Silent Night
3. Ave Maria (Celine Dion version on her Xmas CD)

i have a return ticket, since it is cheaper to buy a round trip than a one way, so I planned ahead and bought one for 6 months after I got here, since that is the length of a visitors visa. now I have to back to CA and apply for a fiance visa...

nice that you get to spend time with your family though...but such a hassle to get everything organized for you guys.

Oh...so by the by...we're planning on a little brother or sister for Kayla (we've started practising so long).

First, let me say the Christmas music wars are really getting out of hand. Two stations, full time, in a market that can't even manage a full-time Classical station. Sad.

I have to say, that while I like the traditional carols, I don't really seek them out when pulling out albums, so I'm going to list the ones that are less traditional. They seem fresher, to my thinking, when I'm looking for something to listen to. Anyway, my faves:

A Charlie Brown Christmas - Vince Guaraldi

Ave Maria (either of the top two versions)- Because I grew up Protestant, I never heard this song until I was an adult.

The Holly Bears a Berry- An Irish folk-song, the Chieftains have it on their Christmas album.

The Boar's Head Carol- A truly joyful song, plus, it's all about food!

The Cherry-Tree Carol- An old medieval story-song. Peter, Paul, and Mary do a lovely version.

Children Go, Where I Send Thee- Peter, Paul, and Mary again.

The Snowman- From the Canadian animated short. Annie Haslam (former lead-singer of Prog-Rock group Renaissance) does a haunting version on her Christmas album.

O Come, Emmanuel- pretty much anything in a minor key, now that I think of it...

I first heard it a couple of years ago at the Christmas Revels.

And that Chieftains album in its entirety is one of my Christmas favorites.

[> I don't know if it's the title, but "O come, o come Emmanuel..." -- Delirium, 00:33:14 11/22/03 Sat (68.121.24.33)

I first heard this carol during the college celebration and thought it was so lovely eventhough it has a bit of a solemn, mournful quality it's got that special awe inspiring of really good spiritual music.

I like them all (except when they keep showing up constantly before Thanksgiving Argh). "Santa Baby", "I'm Getting Nothing for Christmas", "Baby, It's cold outside", uh, "Grandma got runover by a reindeer" though not a X-mas song "The Hanukkah song".

I could go on and on, but I know I would forget ones, my favority quality of them is that a great majority of them are quite sing-able. It's fun to sing them on your own, it's great when you can sing them with friends, I guess I always have happy feelings associated with them because they make you feel like singing along and singing always makes you feel elated. =)

[> I simply love the music. -- LTG, 23:36:33 11/23/03 Sun (68.41.26.198)

Modern, classical, nearly every carol.

Among the ones that haven't been mentioned, I adore:

What Child is This? (I love the Greensleeves melody, and the lyrics suit it quite well.)

Un Flambeau, Jeanette Isabella (mais seulement en français)

Jesus Christ the Apple Tree (I heard this for the first time at Midnight Mass in the Cathedral of St. Louis. Astonishing.)

The Holly and the Ivy (it just makes me smile)

The Wexford Carol (I'm a traditionalist, what can I say?)

Finally, it isn't truly Christmas until I've heard the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel's Messiah.
