My favorite traditional hymns are "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" and "God Rest Ye, Merry Gentlemen." Among the modern songs, everything that I put on my "Merry Christmas, Baby" collection. I like the funny, cock-eyed songs.
Of course, I have to admit to a certain fondness for my own work on the subject, "Christmas in L.A."
I start listening to Christmas music and doing related chores after I get home from Thanksgiving in Ohio. Until then, I switch the TV or radio any time a Christmas ad or song comes on, because it cheapens the meaning of the season.

there is a radio station war of christmas music here... -- shk24, 15:47:19 11/20/03 Thu (208.17.34.25)
2 stations have been playing non-stop christmas music since last week, it kills me...start the friggin' day after thanksgiving and let me enjoy my personal favorite holiday(food, football and beer - what could be better than that?)
my all time favorite is "blue christmas" from elvis, i also like "rockin' around the christmas tree" and my favorite modern one is the waitresses "christmas wrappings".
as far as the more traditional songs go i would have to say "i'll be home for christmas" stands out for me. i believe it was either wolfie or angharad who once posted the story of and the original version of "i'll be home for christmas" which if i recall had a far different intent than the popular version. if you wouldn't mind reprinting it again along with the story, i would appreciate seeing it again. i didn't save it and i only have a slight recollection of it...

Similar song, slightly different, though. -- wwolfe, 16:20:04 11/20/03 Thu (161.149.63.100)
It's "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas."
Which I left off my list of favorite modern songs, now that I think of it.
The original last verse goes:
"Someday soon, we all may be together
If the fates allow
Until then, we'll have to muddle through somehow
So have yourself a merry little Christmas now"
The uncertainty of whether the singer would be reunited with friends and family reflected the similar uncertainty faced by everyone during World War II, which is when this song was written, for the movie "Meet Me in St. Louis," where it was sung by Judy Garland.
Some years later, Bing Crosby recorded his version of the song, at which time he took it upon himself to de-gut the song by changing the lyrics of the last verse to:
"Through the years, we all will be together
If the fates allow
Hang a shining star upon the highest bow
And have yourself a merry little Christmas now"
The first two lines eliminate much of the doubt and fear that was conveyed in the original first two lines. The revised last two lines are essentially a pretty sentiment with no deeper emotion, whereas the original last two lines are a simple, eloquent expression of the human fallibility that we often feel with special keenness at certain moments around Christmas. Sadly, almost no one plays the orignal lyrics anymore, so most people don't know the song's real, and much more moving, meaning.
It's good to see you here, Paul. I hope life is treating you and your family well.

That's a big difference.
Thanks for posting this.

That's odd. -- Mo, 19:20:03 11/20/03 Thu (169.152.251.99)
I don't think I've ever heard the second version. Odd, because "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" is probably my favorite of the Christmas Carols, I would have thought I'd have heard both.

thanks wolfie, now i remember... -- shk24, 09:10:11 11/21/03 Fri (208.17.34.25)
"have yourself a merry little christmas" is another of my favorites. it is amazing how changing the verse just slightly can really affect the message of the song...
on that same note, i recall seeing a vh 1 show(i think it was one hit wonders) where katrina from katrina and the waves said that originally their hit "walking on sunshine" was actually a sad song about a girl who was waiting around for a love that wasn't coming back. but their producer convinced them that if they made it an upbeat, happy tune it would be hit. obviously he was right but i would love to have heard how it was originally done...
thanks for asking about me and the family. we are all well, this is just one of those crazy times with work, school, sports etc so i can drop in and catch up but i haven't been a very good poster lately.
have a great thanksgiving bill, i assume you'll be home in ohio for the holidays. big game for the buckeyes this weekend!
