Subject: An excellent holiday for me.

As always, I flew home to Ohio to see my best friend and his family, and then my extended family. I slept about twelve hours each night, ate lots of food, and thoroughly enjoyed everyone's company. On Thanksgiving itself, I ate my usual four helpings of my aunt's German noodles (my favorite food) and enjoyed the pleasant hum of all my relatives talking as we all sat in various states of food-induced semi-stupor. After my aunt and uncle and I got back to their home, and my uncle and I were watching one of the many football games we saw over the holiday, I said, "I'm absolutely content." Which was true. So I guess that would qualify as a good day.

Other high points:

- Seeing "Master and Commander" with my best friend and his son. We all loved it. It's the first Russell crowe performance I've enjoyed since "LA Confidential." I suspect that Crowe connects at a deep level with this role, but whatever the reason it definitely brought out a warmth and humor in him that were pleasant to see.

- Two rousing games of Trivial Pursuit with my best friend. We are equally saturated in the effluvia of pop culture, so we always have great competitions in this game.

- Seeing a family of five deer in the front yard of a suburban home as we drove back from the movie. Despite having grown up in Ohio, where these creatures are very common, I'd never seen a deer outside of a zoo before. This was a thrill.

I hope everyone's week was a good one. Today we begin our month of everyone bringing food to work. My day is next Tuesday, when I will bring my traditional German chocolate cake - or, as I call it, my people's soul food.
