In reply to: Larq 's message, "My miscellaneous thoughts on trading (long-winded and pointless, so read with discretion)" on 19:10:35 11/15/01 Thu

The other day, I was standing at the armor shop in Hebian-To, browsing the racks of armor and weapons when someone came up to me and said (and thank goodness he was polite, because I've been approached like this before by others who were not and that's ANNOYING!!!), "I would like to trade you for your amuli coat, please." [ASIDE: Please don't anyone show that terribly constructed previous sentence to any of my past English professors ;)]

My response, because it really isn't, was "I'm sorry, Sir, it's not for trade."

"But, I will trade well for it."

Okay, at this point, I am usually slightly annoyed because I've already stated that said item is NOT for sale. BUT! But, I was also curious what he meant by "trade well," so I replied, "As I mentioned, Sir, I was not intending to trade it. But, what are you offering?"

He offered me a set of low-AL, matching upper-body yoroi. I was not interested, so I said no thank you.

He counteroffered the rest of the set of armor, and I again responded no thank you.

Granted, he was lower in level than I by a significant margin, and he also was not concerned at all about the AL, protects or enchantments on the coat, so I am inclined to think that he's a rookie at offering, but I could still be mistaken. But, "not for sale," in my mind generally equates with "IF that person IS willing to EVER trade for that item, the offer that I'm making BETTER be pretty kick-ass."

I dunno, what do you think about this?

As I mentioned, the inquirer was VERY, VERY polite to me, so I had absolutely zero problems with his approach or the way he handled the potential transaction... other than the fact that, after I declined a second time, he continued to offer. I actually ended up walking away.
