Subject: ~ slow and carefully ~

She slowly took a step into the Hatching Grounds. She didn't bother to look around, she just took more small, careful steps onto the hot Sands. She reached one hand up to stroke the blue fire lizard that was perched on her shoulder. He let out a soft chirp, barely audible, and Jyssa stopped. She side stepped, and then continued on her way, having gone past the first dragon egg. Carefully, slowly, she made it to the Queen Egg. She reached one hand out, and her fingers brushed it's surface lightly. She looked up at where she knew the Gold Dragon was, standing protectively over the eggs, and she smiled politely, bowing to first the Dragon and then to the WeyrWoman. "I am Jyssa - a Canidate for your fine clutch, Gold Sylenth." She said clearly, while the flit wrapped it's tail protectively about her neck, standing up on her shoulder, clutching her ear lightly with his small talon. "This is Magi, my flit." Jyssa said, and Magi let out another soft chirp. Jyssa's gaze went down, and now by looking at her you could tell something was wrong. Her blue-violet eyes were unseeing. Jyssa was blind. Magi looked around, hissing lightly at anyone staring. "Magi!" Jyssa scolded softly, and Magi ducked his head, stopping the noise.

~flash! There was no way out. All the walls, most of the floor, the ceiling - everything was on fire. All around her she could see figures, writhing on the ground, people screaming, flits screaming... Then a loud crash, more yells. One of the walls had caved in, trapping more people. This one one gather that would be remembered! Why had the Lord Holder built with wood right before the new pass was schulded to begin? That wasn't very smart! All that ran through Jyssa's head as she scrambled around, trying to escape the flames. She did not want to die! She would not! Suddenly, ssearing pain. She looked down - her skirts had caught fire! She screamed, dropping to the ground, rolling around... Finally she got it mostly out, and she continued trying to get out. Smoke was filling the room. Then, in front of her, another wall collapsed, sending up white sparks. There was pain in her eyes and suddenly she couldn't see anymore. A flit, or at least she thought that was what it was, appeared, and it tugged on her untill she was free from the building. She was the only survivor. She never recovered her sight.

Gasping, Jyssa realized that she was on her knees in the Hatching Sands on Honshu. She slowly got to her feet, hearing Magi hissing at those staring at her, but this time she didn't stop him. She felt a single tear make it's way down her cheek. She got to her feet, and her sightless eyes roved around the Sands. She sniffed deeply, and brushed her fingers on the Queen Egg. Oh, how she wished she could Impress. Please... some egg hatch and be Impressed by me! was the thought that ran through her head, over and over and over...
