Livin’ Outside the Window
by Aaron Maners
Several months ago a well-known documentary channel aired a special report on women who had given birth while in prison. Their children were raised, even as toddlers, in the cold, sterile jailhouse environment. For example, each of the mothers wore an orange jumpsuit and could only move about the commons area with leg shackles on. The floors were specially matted, and lined up along the barred cells were several cribs and changing tables. This was truly a unique sight.
Imagine being one of the young children born into that situation. You didn’t do the crime, yet you were helping to do the time. (Thanks a lot, Mom.) Imagine being 5 or 6 years old and spending your mornings looking out that small window. It is your only glimpse of the outside world. You see trees, birds and huge fields. As a matter of fact, by looking at them so often, you’ve gotten to be quite an expert on those trees, those birds, and those huge fields. But only those. Your understanding of the "outside" is very limited. You only know the little bit you’ve seen. There is no knowledge of the beaches, the mountains, Disney, or football games and shopping malls. There is so much more to see and experience—but not for you. Your world is limited to what you can see through that small window.
Many Christians live the same way. Because of Adam’s disobedience, we were born into the jailhouse of sin. With salvation and our belief in Jesus, we are set free from the "judgment of sin and death" (Rom. 8:2). Yet many Christians view the huge expanse of the zoe life through a small, limited window. They feel that all of those great blessings are for someone else who is more deserving, more holy. Not true! God’s blessings for life are available to us all! He wants us to run in the open fields of healing, to climb huge mountains of peace and security, and to swim in oceans of destiny! He wants us to live life!
We learn of how huge life is through reading His Word. Spend time meditating on the goodness of God and on His plans of blessings for your life.
Now go back and read Colossians 1:13–23 one more time.
