Topic—Children of the Promise

Power Point—It isn’t enough to "get out of Egypt"; we must also "get Egypt out of us."

This Week’s Memory Verse—John 10:10

Access Database—Exodus 19–20

The Lingering Prints of Egypt

by Aaron Maners

The Exodus: Israelite slaves being delivered out of Egyptian bondage and into the Promised Land. What an awesome model of how God desires to deliver us out of sin and bondage and into victory and blessing through Jesus! But for the Israelites there were still a few snags along the way, thanks to stubborn, unbelieving attitudes. Not only did God desire to bless the Israelites, He offered them something of far greater value…time with Himself. We’re not talking about church time or somebody’s stale Bible lesson. God the Father, the all-powerful Creator of the universe, offered the Israelites easy-to-access, intimate, hang-out time with Himself! What a great offer…and that offer is ours, also! We have a great destination, heaven, and an opportunity to hang out with God and be blessed by all of the promises that are found in His Word!

So let’s think about this one; maybe learn from the Israelites’ mistakes. They saw God do great miracles. They also heard His invitation to draw near. In other words, they knew what was available to them. Yet for some reason they chose a lifestyle of rebelliousness and began to distance themselves from God. In Exodus 20:18–21 the Jews even said, "Moses, you go see God. Come back and tell us what He says. We’re not going up there!" (paraphrase).

Physically they had left Egypt, but in every other way they were still trapped in enemy territory. Their Egyptian "education" had clouded their view of God. Sin caused them to retreat rather than repent, to hide rather than to hunger. Moses ran to the Lord to endeavor to know Him; they ran from the Lord to continue in ungodliness. The first thing they did when the pressure was on was to go back to their old ways of doing things. As a matter of fact, by Exodus 32 and 33 Moses was covered and consumed by God’s glory on the mountain while the Israelites were in the valley making an idol!

Do yourself a favor. Get rid of those lingering prints of Egypt. You don’t need them. They only weigh you down and cause you to stumble. God’s desire for your life is greater than anything you can accomplish or even imagine on your own.

Now, go back and read Exodus 19–20 one more time.
