When we choose to give our lives to Jesus and are saved from our sins, a paradigm shift happens in our spirit-man. We trade a lifestyle of failures and rebellion for an eternity of righteousness and fellowship with God Himself. We are supernaturally transported out of the zone of guilt and certain damnation into the zone of character building and spiritual growth.
Have you ever thought about what it means that Jesus did not have a biological, earthly father? Instead, He was conceived by the Holy Spirit! That means that his blood carried the very DNA of God! So, as Jesus died on the cross for you and me, He shed the very blood of God. This blood was an offering that was used to satisfy the costs of all our sins. His blood saved us. Jesus died once for all and the benefits are instantaneous from the moment you accept Him into your life! Our belief in Jesus and His thorough work on the cross gives us new life in our spirit-man. It really is that simple. And guess what…His grace is able to keep us secure for all eternity. Having trouble believing that? Read Jude 24–25!
"Sounds great," you say, "but why do I find myself sinning after salvation? The zoe kind of life is great as long as I’m on the mountaintop…but the valley of conviction is a real bummer."
As we learned before, our spirit-man was instantly transformed—resurrected—by the blood of Jesus. However, God has seen far into our future and has commanded us to renew our minds, our will and emotions by consuming His Word. You see, our nature, having been passed down from Adam, is sinful. The only way to change that is by consuming (and being consumed by) God’s Word! (See James 1:22 and 2:14.) Putting the principles of the Word of God into practice in our lives opens the door to change, to the zoe kind of life that’s full of blessing and victory. Through God’s Word we learn of His nature and characteristics and are able to have them work their way into our lifestyle! How’s that for special effects!
Now, go back and read Romans 8:1–17 one more time.
