Beating Boredom
by Doug Lasit
What is boredom? Some say it is having nothing to do. Some say it is having nothing fun to do. When Soren Kierkegaard, a philosopher, was trying to find a word to describe a state of being he saw in people, he came up with the idea of "boredom." His definition was a little different from today’s. It went something like this: "Boredom is having no real understanding of the purpose for your life."
From the day that I became a Christian, I have honored God with my time. I have never been bored! There has always been a sermon to preach, a nation to touch, a camp to run, and there have always been young people at my side helping me do it.
In our culture, young people have little responsibility until they are 18, except to get their homework done. In other cultures you become an adult when you can work, when you can contribute to the family or the community, not when you reach 16 or 18.
In the family of God it is no different. Young people can give to the kingdom of God now! You can work with younger children, go on missions trips, be involved on campuses, help lead the youth group, pray, do outreaches and serve your friends and neighbors.
Apathy and boredom are attributes reserved for those who do not know God. As a Christian you are part of the greatest work in the world. Why do we waste so much time? Statistics say that more than 75 percent of everyone who receives Christ are under the age of 24. That means you have the greatest amount of harvest in the church.
A foolish young person will not think about his time or about his purpose. Once time is gone, you cannot get it back. Is there anything you should be doing right now?
Now go back and read Ephesians 5:15–21 one more time.
