Because of our message and purpose, what we say and what we do must match up. Our words on Sunday and what we do on Monday must be the same. The key is the heart. Just as your physical heart affects every part of your physical body, your spiritual heart will affect the rest of your spiritual body—eyes, ears and so forth. If the physical heart is malfunctioning, the entire body will suffer. The closer your heart is to God, the more you do and say the things that are in the heart of God. When your heart does not line up with your actions, you compromise your message. A vessel of honor will contain truth and act upon it, not just talk about it. Proverbs mentions several body parts that are all affected spiritually the same way your real heart affects your real body. Here are a few. If your spiritual heart is right… …Your ears will listen to wisdom, and probably the right music! Ears should not listen to gossip or idol talk (18:15). …Your spiritual eyes will see correctly. It’s called perspective. The right perspective will keep you positive in difficult times (20:12). …Your hands will represent not just work but actions. It is the heart that guides our actions and our work ethic (12:14). …Your feet will never take you somewhere you should not go. Have you ever found yourself somewhere you knew you should not be? Feet also represent your future and your God-given purpose (4:23–27). …Your back will stay strong, and you will avoid certain punishments. Punishment was often applied to the back, which would weaken the whole body (10:14). Remember, all of the issues of life are worked out in your heart. We must strive to be like David, a man after God’s own heart, who lived by what he believed. Now go back and read Matthew 15:8 one more time. Identity Matrix—Disciples of Christ... Know God—In what way did God reveal Himself to you as you read His Word? Live for God—What one lifestyle change is God calling you to make? Love Others—In what way is God calling you to minister to someone in need? Bear Fruit—In what ways will you set the example and the standard for others to follow?
