Peaceful Times
by Doug Lasit
Have you ever noticed that there are some people in this old world that never seem to be rattled by anything that life throws at them? One thing is for sure: I’m not one of those people! When I am going through something, I am definitely no picture of "quiet peace." But I have to admit, there is some comfort in knowing that we all have times of confusion and anxiety—it’s a common struggle. We all struggle to cope with life’s heartaches and setbacks. Questions, frustration, agitation, more questions, even discouragement can at times set in. But have you ever noticed that, at the moment when you are most frustrated, this thing called the "peace of God" rushes in…and everything seems OK? Just as a mom calms and quiets her child in her arms, so can Jesus calm and quiet you with His love!
When you are confused: Confusion is a result of too many opinions or voices all speaking at the same time. Jesus can quiet those voices so that you can hear His voice (see Luke 8:24–25).
When something happens that you do not understand: When things happen that we do not understand, we wrestle with such questions as, "Why did God let this happen?" Be sure that God knows what He is doing! This releases us from the pressure of feeling guilty or responsible for things out of our control (see Prov. 3:5–6).
When you face a difficult situation: When things look impossible, when the odds are against you, when you are out of answers and discouragement begins to set in, expect God to help you and then exchange your strength for His. This way, He gets all the glory (see Heb. 13:6).
When you feel hurt or wounded by a friend: We must remember that the only perfect friend is Jesus. Our responsibility is not to hold others accountable for how good a friend they are, but to be the kind of friend that Jesus says we should be (see Prov. 18:24–19).
So, what is the peace of God? It’s one of those mysteries that few of us will ever really understand. That’s OK, though. We can simply relax and enjoy it! Let Him quiet you with His love today!
Now go back and read Psalm 62 one more time.
