What You Sow

by Aaron Maners

"Cast your bread upon the waters, For after many days you will find it again" (Ecclesiastes 11:1).

Who throws perfectly good bread into the lake? This odd analogy is another way for God to tell us that what we give will truly return.

My brother and I spent our childhood years watching our parents travel from church to church, preaching the gospel as evangelists. For some reason, money always seemed to be scarce no matter how hard they worked. During this time, I also recall many instances when they would give to others who were in need in addition to faithfully giving their tithes and offerings. Frustration seized my brother and me as we watched years of faithful giving seemingly go unnoticed and unrewarded by God. But as we grew older and learned God’s Word for ourselves, we knew that He was truly faithful. Youth evangelist Gregg Johnson says, "Whatever leaves your hand now in faith, will never leave your future." Soon, we began to see ten years of sowing, ten years of giving and ten years of faithful obedience in tithing produce a harvest in our parents’ home, their ministry and their money. Now they live comfortably and humbly speak in front of crowds of thousands in several nations of the world.

If we can learn to live in expectation that what we have sown will be returned to us, we will have stepped into the success realm called faith. Of course, God gives us principles to live by that will guide us both in times of need as well as in times of plenty. For instance, "…whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly" (2 Cor. 9:6).

Many of us have been in a position where we don’t have much to give. As a result, we sow sparingly (or sometimes not at all). As Christians, we must learn to rearrange our priorities. After all, doesn’t it make sense to invest in God’s economy rather than in movies and popcorn? So, just as none of us is truly too busy to pray, none of us is too broke to give to God or His work.

Now, go back and read 2 Corinthians 9:6–15 one more time.
