What’s in Your House?
by Aaron Maners
In our last devo we spoke of money sown, seed planted and bread cast onto the water, each of these centering around one basic thing… our hard earned money leaving our hands and our control. But being people of faith in God, we believe His Word that He’ll take care of us. As a matter of fact, Hebrews 11:1 says, "Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see." The financial blessings in our lives depend on our faith in God touching our money—our "gift"—after it leaves our sight.
Think about this phrase: "being sure of what we hope for." The hope that is being referred to here is not a wish, as in a fairy tale, but an expectant desire. In other words, we give our money, expecting that God will touch it and bless it. You see, if you are relying on yourself and your minimum wage, part-time job, then you have an empty hope. We need to have a hope that is certain, that believes God’s Word and believes that He alone is our ultimate source for everything. This takes a higher level of believing, thinking and acting.
"But," you say, "I have a hard time believing anything I can’t see!" Wait just a minute! What about all of those who have climbed to the top of a bungee tower, never having demanded to inspect the cord, or the cord’s factory or even to meet the cord’s manufacturer? Yet, hundreds of feet up, they put total faith in it. You may even be one of those people! You probably even paid lots of money to do it! Or, what about the elevator you rode on last week? Check the cables? Meet the engineer? Nope. Rode it with blind faith.
It’s just like that widow at Zarephath. She was in a situation of absolute poverty when God called upon her to help Him out. Did God truly need her tiny bit of oil and flour? Nope. He sent Elijah on an obedience test to a widow who was herself being radically tested. She learned this principle: "You can have what you have in your house, or you can increase what you have in your house." As a result of hope in God, she saw her own needs met, as well as the needs of God’s servant.
Now, go back and read 1 Kings 17:7–16 one more time.
