Topic—Harvest Takers

Power Point—We must begin to think of our gifts to God as seed for the harvest.

This Week’s Memory Verses—Psalm 37:25–26

Access Database—Matthew 6:19–34

Whatcha Plantin’?

by Aaron Maners

By now we understand that we will reap a harvest from the seeds we’ve sown. In other words, what we’ve turned loose in the past is showing up today and tomorrow…in greater measure! So, let’s analyze the harvests that we are receiving from the things that we are spending our money on. My pastor says, "our priorities can be found in our checkbooks." In other words, all money is seed, but not every place we’re spending it is ground that’ll make that seed produce a harvest.

For example, we’ll spend $7.00 on that cool action movie and $15.00 on popcorn and candy. Sometimes our only harvests are the memories of a car chase and a bellyache! Or how about $57.00 on those jeans? Sure we look great…until they fade or until they are out of style and the next fad comes along. Here’s a good one: Spend $50.00 on a video game on which—in two sleepless weeks of playing and neglecting homework you have witlessly conquered each and every level. Game over…no real harvest.

None of these things are bad in and of themselves. (At least we hope not!) Everyone likes to have a little fun and enjoy the things of life. But as believers who have their faith in God and show it by giving to His work, we need to make certain that these types of things don’t leave us without good seed to sow when the opportunity arises.

Circling around are great stories of teenagers who have saved their small paychecks, given faithfully, and then seen God bless them at huge levels. These kids go on to buy other kids much needed shoes, school supplies, and even pay their way to a life-changing summer camp. Yes! Even teenagers are being used by God to impact the lives of their peers through their obedience in giving! Pray this prayer, and make it a declaration to the Lord:

God, this offering is seed. It’s no longer "only money."

I want to put it into Your economy of blessing.

I am believing this seed will produce a harvest according Your Word.

-I am committed to blessing others with the harvest You give, and I choose to give to You out of joyful obedience. Amen.

Now go back and read Matthew 6:19–34 one more time.
