K'lashtai had no time to be scared. By the time he sucked in a breath of terror, Thread was upon them. Dalleth writhed his way through the strands, belching fire like some primeval monster, sending the once-deadly Thread floating down to the other wings as harmless black dust. An odd exhilaration took hold of the pair, and they were reluctant to halt, even for a moment. But Dalleth went suddenly between and emerged some distance away from the falling Thread, explaining apologetically, {{II need more 'stone.}} ~~Then by all means, let's get some!~~

With that, Dalleth swerved downwards, coming to an abrupt landing beside the other weyrlings who were bagging firestone. 'Some more 'stone, please?' he asked. A sack was tossed to him, and he saw the blatant look of envy in J'rek's eyes. 'Don't worry, you'll get to fight Thread soon enough.' J'rek stared balefully at him until 'Tai was forced to look away. Dalleth leaped back into the sky, and they were soon flaming Thread again, but K'lashtai's mind was not on Thread as it should have been. He was busy trying to puzzle out the meaning in J'rek's stare. That was why he didn't notice the Thread clump until it was nearly upon them, and why he didn't duck quickly enough. The strand struck his arm squarely, sending a jolt of unexpected pain all through his body. K'lashtai barely had time to shout, 'Between, Dall!' before the brown obeyed, as always one step ahead of his rider.

They exited between and immediately resumed fighting, and this time K'lashtai focused his mind entirely on the battle. He now had the stinging reprobation of his injured arm to remind him lest his mind stray from his task.
