Subject: re: Slide, Cuyama Pk., Thorn Pt.

Worked these LO's in'73,'74,&'75. Anyone know of restoration to Cuyama Peak? Have been to Thorn Pt. recently, and what a shame to see it deteriorate. With creation of the "Dick Smith Wilderness", it appears the LP is making Thorn point 'disappear' from public awareness. Good to see Slide being entered into your program! I worked it in '75.

Most notable were the prevalent Condor sitings I had at ALL three of these LO assignments. Other true stories abound!!!
I was nearly killed at Thorn due to anoxia from a poorly burning gas refrige. This sent a regional directive to upgrade ALL refriges to have ventpipes leading outside.

The Helo crew that slung propane tanks down to me at Slide SHEARED OFF a regulator causing raw propane to blow straight up into the bottom of the helicopter. Had it ignited would have killed the pilot, observer, ground spotter, and possibly me too. Ask any old-timers with the Rose Valley Helishots, and they'll shake in their boots!

Also, does anyone know if a party named 'Mark Thornton' ever wrote a book on the history of lookouts? He lived in Groveland, CA sometime back in the late seventies.

Thank you all! D.O'C.
