As I was reading the article Coaching for a Change by Jamie McKenzie, it obviously sounded exactly like the vision of our Tech Mentor Program. While the author mentioned many key components for successful “coaching” programs, I felt that the most important one mentioned was that of “customization.”

Many years ago, we tried to train all of our teachers to become computer literate through large group instruction usually on in-service days. Because of the varying levels of computer experience and the many different teaching areas, it made for less than successful training. Not everyone wanted or needed to know the what was being taught that day.

By customizing technology education for the teacher, you allow the teacher to communicate to the coach what it is they feel is important about technology and how it relates/supports their specific subject. The teacher and the coach can meet one on one to plan and discuss how to best incorporate the technology. Obviously too, after the lesson has been taught, the coach and teacher can then evaluate the lesson and make any improvements or changes. Through the entire process, the teacher basically has someone to help “guide the way” which I feel makes the process a little less scary! With the Tech Mentor Program so far, I have found that one of the things my proteges like best is knowing that they have someone to help them with the technology when something doesn’t work or go as planned.
