The definition of mentor that we came up with this summer works quite well. I would also add to it. I would add, time manager, conflict solver and grunt to the list.
There are two areas that need to happen in order to be a good mentor. First, you must just be a good coach. A coach is someone who can judge what level each person begins their work and works dilligently to guide, support, push and drag each person to a newer level of learning/understanding. This pertains to a football coach, a reading Olympics coach and a technology mentor/coach and many others. . We are doing all of these things for our proteges...or we should be. Keeing this in mind, I think the summer program should contain more instruction/guidance in working with a group and how to bring a group from point A to point B.
The second area is the plain area of technology. If the computers are working, if the printers print and the projection systems project....then our job as coach is a bit easier. But the moment the technology fails...the entire pyramid with our proteges start to fall.
You asked what makes a good teacher. A good teacher is someone who can be both a learner and a coach , even at the same time. I want to learn something from my students and my proteges each day, while giving to them a part of my learning and understanding.
Being a mentor has been much much more than I thought.
