Subject: Characteristics of Mentoring

What does it mean to be a mentor? We did some initial work on this in the summer orientation workshop and brainstormed a list of descriptors we thought fit at that time: caring, patience, understanding, knowledgeable, accepting, flexible, reassuring, encouraging, available, resourceful, approachable, positive, willing to share ideas, easy going, honest, intuitive, reflective, tactful, passionate/enthusistic, adaptable, and empathic.

Ginny and I are currently taking a CU course on Essential Questions, and we are working together on the following essential questions (related to the Tech Mentor Program, of course!): What are the essential characteristics or traits and responsibilities or functions of a successful technology mentor and how can we support and promote them in that role? What characteristics make a good teacher? How does technology support the learning process?

Please consider both the descriptors and the questions above to reflect on your experience as a mentor so far. How would you begin to answer the questions posed based on your experiences to date?
