Smart Idea: Laptops for Teachers by Katie Dean

http://www.wired.com/news/school/0,1383,46987,00.html

This article was about an initiative in the state of Michigan in which laptops were given to every full time teacher in the state. The Governor allocated $110 million dollars to equip full time public school teachers with a personal computer, software, internet access and training. Basically, the way that it worked was that every school district was given $1200.00 for every full time public school teacher in their district. The money could then be used for teachers to purchase either a laptop (which most did) or a desktop computer. (The teacher decided which one would be most useful.) Teachers that already had computers were given the option of purchasing digital cameras or other types of computer related equipment.

Based upon teacher surveys and feedback from the program, teachers were also given workshops on topics such as Internet, Hyperstudio, and other programs relevant to their subjects and interests. What they found was the obvious, when teachers have access to technology, in most cases, they use it! As a result, teachers were better equipped to help students with their technology and computer needs making them more technology literate too.
