January 2002 Reflection

The work with my mentees is starting to kick into high gear. Our “project” planned for the fourth quarter is taking shape. We started with the project outcome of a newspaper on the Civil War, and have changed it to a magazine specifying a target battle/time. My mentees are getting excited as the time nears. We realize that we have a way to go with our planning, but are looking very much forward to the unit.
We still struggle with finding the time to meet, however I know that we are no different than many of mentor peers. We grab time when we can and try to be as productive as possible.
It has been very helpful having Ellen and Adrienne throughout the process. We cheer each other on and exchange ideas. (Thanks to Ellen and Adrienne!) Our two scheduled workshop days are quickly approaching. The two days will be a welcome change.
Presently I am working with two of my mentees on a poetry unit that we planned with the assistance of our librarian, who is also assisting with our Civil War Unit. We have been utilizing the computer lab using poetry web sites to teach a variety of poems, books to find a favorite poet and poems, and the internet to research= the poet, and word processing to write poems that will be put into a classroom bound poetry book. Fun stuff!
