I'm sure plenty of you will disagree with me on this, but I had to let this out:

Fredless Thoughts

Written by Mere Smith

Okay, I’m just going to give some comments I had on "Fredless," not a review just comments (which is what I’ve been doing anyway) and then some.

Okay. Deep Breath.

Since when did this show become "Cordelia’s mock fest" or should I say "Fang Gang Investigations" because frankly it's getting pretty annoying now. The show is called Angel, yet up until now I’ve had it up to here with the lack of focus on the Angel character. When I say that I don’t mean "Goofy Angel" or "Old Angel" from Carpe Noctem or "Let’s fight and talk or deal later" Angel either. I’m referring to the one that still hasn’t had a scene by himself. I’m referring to the one that used to talk to the people he helped in finding redemption for themselves a la "In the Dark," when Angel was advising the abused woman on how to take control of her life. I’m talking about the confident, not cocky, attractive, smart, and great listener of a souled vampire seeking redemption.

The basis of seeking redemption is gone. I haven’t seen or heard it referred to yet. Since when does the theme "learning to become a man" translate into Angel becoming more like David Boreanaz within the span of 30 seconds. I like DB but I watch the show for Angel. I don’t know who this "FG-slapped-around-can-be-an-embarrassment" is anymore.

And I feel so bad because I miss him so much.

I don’t mind Angel growing up but when that’s done it should be a forward progression. Ever since "Epiphany" there should have been a gradual development to change. But frankly, what we ended up getting was Bozo the Clown.

Does Gunn have a point anymore? Obviously not and it’s really sad but something came to me yesterday. While watching this episode I realized that Amy Acker has gotten not only more screentime than J. but also has more leading scenes dedicated to her as in That Vision Thing, etc. Here we have J.A.R. who’s been a lead for practically more than a year and he’s just happening to get his "episode that explains it all" this season.

I don’t want to think or say it but it’s hard for me not to believe that J.A.R. has become the token black character, and was just added because he’s black.

Cordelia Cordelia, for every step you take forward you take million steps back. Even though the B/A scene was funny, it really showed the lack of respect her and Wesley had for the recently dead.

The" smooth your ass off" line was … disturbing. Was that supposed to come off as "sexy" because it came off like water on lead and really didn’t make much sense.

And for crying out loud give Charisma some decent clothes. If I have to see her parading in hooker wear or another "see my boobs" camera angle again I will vomit.

An episode about a bug?????? Um, what?

Separated from Buffy, Greenwalt? Really? Cause the last time I checked, Buffy already played that "heart, muscle, brains" stuff in Primeval.

Only episode so far worth my repeated viewings is TOGOM and the Darla scenes, all the other episodes revolved around unresolved plots. All of these character-based episodes are fine when we actually learn something from them, but as with the others minus TOGOM we don’t learn anything new about Fred except she has great parents. Her declaration that she realized she’d have to live with the fact Pylea was REAL and that Angel couldn’t save her was a great idea but wasn't developed in the previous episodes.

Show us. Don’t tell us.

Darla, for the love of everything hurry up and make yourself known!

If there’s anything I realized it’s this:

ANGEL works best and only if it revolves around Angel. These character based episodes are a waste of time simply because nothing of any significance actually happens. If something did then I wouldn't be writing this. The only characters so far that I’ve seen to have successful character based episodes that tied in nicely to the Angel character was "Darla" and wow, I really can’t think of another one.

Darla is the best thing that ever happened to this show. If it wasn’t for her "must-see-TV" appearances this year, I don’t think I’d be watching this "has great potential but going no where fast" show.

Sad, but at least to me, true.

There is a silver lining in all of this in the sense that maybe the writers are doing this so the Darla/baby/Holtz plot can actually end off the season unlike last season. In other words the writers are trying to get all of the character based episodes out of the way because we won't be getting much filler later.

Fine with me. Just wish I had something meatier to chew on until then because these episodes so far are just disappointing.

And that's just MY opinion! LOL. =)
