Mahathir? You don't like Rizal because he didn't write Tagalog? I've never seen Mahathir on TV not speaking in English. I'm sure Rizal wrote in Tagalog, too, maybe not books. He wrote in Spanish, German, etc.
That's a contentious issue, Rizal writing in Spanish. Really, if he'd published in Tagalog, in the 1800s, only Tagalogs would have understood him, what's that 15%? And only those who knew how to read! (And what's that, 5% of 15%?)Spanish he could have been understood by more Filipinos. Because all the Filipinos WHO COULD READ at that time were schooled in Spanish. Much like English forty years ago.
My Bisaya ancestors if anyone of them could read at that time, wouldn't have made heads or tails of Huwag Mo Akong Ano!-hin. Don't bring up that pseudo-nationalistic issue in any forum, even in your own household, again. It shamefully ignores the realities of that time. What would Basque say about our reasonings!
