Actually, no. Asians in the socio-economic sense means people from Asia, including those from Western Asia(Middle East). the Indian subcontinent, East Asia and South East Asia. Asians can also strictly mean those peoplle from East Asia and South East Asia.
This is not the case genetically however. East Asians(Those of sinic-mongolid stock i.e. the Chinese, Japanese, Koreans, Chinese-Singaporeans and Vietnamese) are actually very disticnt from the people of South East Asia excluding the chinese diasposras of Singapore and Vietnam. These people are what we call the Malays. People from the Philippines, Indoenesia, Malaysia, southern Thailand and others are Malays. Then there are the Pacific Islanders(polynesians, Melaneasians, Hawaiians, Maoris, etc. according to the US census) which are very closely related to the Malays. Indeed, the two groups are usually termed as the Malayo-Polynesians, more commonly called as the Austronesians. If you look closely, there are more similarities between the Malays and the Pacific Islanders than there are between the Malays and the Mongoloids. Body art(tattooing, piercings), animism, language, headhunting, creation mythos, etc are all similar between most Austronesians cultures o the Pacific.
