Subject: Loss to CSUF. . .a good thing?

I think the Mustangs have, justifiably so, a great deal of confidence heading into Thursday's match up with Idaho. However, as Varnie mentioned, Idaho is the team the 'Stangs were least anxious to meet. We won five in a row on the road before dropping last night's contest to Fullerton. Because of our lack of success against Idaho this year, I don't think the Mustangs were feeling OVERconfident, but in case they were, the Fullerton loss brought them back down to earth. The loss shouldn't have demoralized the team though--because we were in position to win at the end, having fought back after a horrible first half.

Bottom line, I think the team likely has the right mix of apprehension/respect and confidence to perform well enough to beat the Vandals.

If we mix up the defenses (tossing in some of the newly instituted zone) I think we have a good shot at advancing to the second round. While we may be an underdog against the Vandals and possibly in all three rounds, I think we could win the tournament.

After Shane's 32 point performance last night, I don't think Idaho will develop a special defense to slow him down, but Shane is a wildcard that could draw defenses out of the paint. Shane has the most points in a single game in conference this year (32) and he has the most rebounds in a game in conference this year (17). The problem is, he is as likely to score 20+ as he is to score 6 or 8. If he comes to play, he can present problems for anyone--especially when our guards are hitting their shots too. This team has shown late in the season that it can stop or at least slow scorers (Nate Carter/Ralphy Holmes/Tony Darden). I like their heart defensively. This, in my opinion, is the biggest difference from years past.

Play loose, play tough defense, hit the glass, play with confidence--and I think we can win Thursday.
