Subject: Rigoletto

Out of all the operas we've watched so far, Rigoletto has to be my favorite. I thought Carmen and The Magic Flute, were ok, but nothing like Rigoletto. I enjoyed how most of the opera was based on revenge, both by Rigoletto and the courtiers, unlike The Magic Flute were Tamino's main goal was to be able to be with Pamina, and Carmen were Don Jose's goal was to get and then stay with Carmen. The only problem I had with Rigoletto, was that some of the events were a little hard to believe. Rigoletto allowed the courtiers to put a blindfold on him that completely blinds and deafens him allowing him to take part in the abduction of his own daughter without even noticing it. It's hard to believe how naive Gilda was kept too. She didn't even know Rigoletto's name. I also liked how so many emotions were incorporated into this opera and how you can interpret it in so many different ways. Some people saw Gilda's death as Rigoletto's fault, and other's thought it was the Duke's or courtier's fault. I thought it was all brought on by Rigoletto for pushing his limits with his job as the Duke's jester. I feel it's his fault he was cursed which led to the death of his beloved daughter.
