Subject: It's unlikely we bottom out completely
In reply to: (per) collingwoodj 's message, "Re-post of collingwoodj's post ... minus the insult" on 22:16 15/04/24 Mon

Our list is too good for that, on paper. Our coach is too good and too new to have any vultures circling for his job.

But lets face it... A 9th place finish is the same as 18th to Collingwood supporters!

The "war chest" is perhaps overrated. It depends on 8 players all retiring at once. The chances of that are slim.

More likely is it happens over a 3-4 year period.

It would be a real shame if Pendles didn't go at least one more year to try and get that games record.

Sidebottom has already stated that he thinks he can go again next year.

Howe isn't guaranteed to be out the door this year either.

Mitchell, WHE, Elliot, & Mihocek could also still have a few more in them. They're only 30-31 years old at the moment. If Pendles, Sidebottom and Howe are measuring sticks, that's at least 2-3 more years out of them.

Cox... Maybe he's done this year. But I feel that might come down to the club moving him on rather than him making the call. When is he contracted to?

If these players don't retire straight away, then maybe some money is freed up by 1 year deals for them going forward, on less money. But that depends on what their current contract situation is.

The big concern at the moment is that while we may have some promising kids already on the list - they don't seem to be anywhere near ready yet to get a game, let alone provide a meaningful contribution. And that middle tier, that should be kicking the selection door down aren't looking like 200 gamers.

I doubt that will see us bottom out but it may see us miss finals for a couple of years before we bounce back. Which is fine. It always happens like that, as your history report shows.
