more contrived, especially the northern states versions.

As it stands Victoria is carved up by ten and if there are great prospects who attract a bid under forty, they can't be matched. In contrast, the likes of the GC can snare three first rounders with points accumulation.

Sydney is clearly a well organised club but it has the advantage of being able to snare father sons and academy players solely by points despite playing in the most finals series since the turn of the century. The WA and SA clubs are as hobbled as the Victorians.

Consider this, if Nick Daicos or Harley Reid had been northern academy products, they could have been picked up by Brisbane, GC, Sydney or the Giants, but not by their eventual destination clubs Collingwood and the Weagles of they had been in their academies. This demonstrates quite starkly the inequity of the system, while acknowledging that the AFL is trying to promote the game in the northern states.
