Subject: The Collingwood Qualification.
In reply to: Geo 's message, "Kudos to the club for the way it has recognised and honoured Nathan Buckley" on 18:26 27/11/24 Wed

When Bucks was dominating in the 1990s, the media said he stood out because he was in a shit team.

When Judd was dominating in shit Carlton teams, the media said he stood out despite being in a shit team.

It's amazing the different qualification on players.

Bucks is one of the best I've seen -- beautiful kick on either foot, could run forever, and got lots of ball (and in an era taggers could be do all sorts of illegal things to stop you). In those Tony Shaw years, Bucks would also be thrown around to fill holes, like playing on Wayne Carey at CHF/CHB.

From 1994 - 2001, Bucks played in spasmodic sides*, which arguably didn't help his marquee. (I think Gavin Brown suffers similar depreciation.)

There's that famous story where Heath Shaw allegedly challenged Bucks in a team meeting (when Bucks was coach), and asked him what he knew about winning a premiership. That we didn't succeed in 2002 - 03 is no fault of Buckley's. His effort in 2002 was Herculean. There's that story Scott Burns tells about the 2002 GF where Lockyer marked a Lions' kickout, and handballed it to Bucks, who drilled a soaked ball from outside 50 on a wet day, saying right then he (Burns) thought Bucks was a level above them.

Given the player Bucks was, and the way he spoke in that year he was commentating for Channel 7, it's astonishing he was such a dour, defensive, negative coach.

* I think Pendles also suffers depreciation playing in some truly abysmal years at Collingwood -- ironically at the hands of Buckley as coach. I hope we don't do the same to Nick.
