She takes the lead, the scents getting stronger. She sees a flash of white tail, a spindly leg, then a whole deer, then several, leaping over logs and ducking tree branches in desperate flight. She pants and increases her pace, her hunger gorge rising.

She barks to her pups, signaling them with a glance and body language to fan out behind her. The deer are far ahead, but at this pace they will tire easily. The success of the hunt is not confirmed yet, but they are slowly gaining...
