Ok, now I've heard you restate your position and now I think that we are in complete agreement! My argument for the positives of I.V. was that it helped foster a close relationship between student & school. However, as you correctly observed, UCSB alumni move away from IV (and from SB for that matter) so in fact it is a disadvantage in that the alumni are no longer in the area.
In fact, giving it more thought, the LA area schools are far more likely to have alumni living in the vicinity of their university as compared to UCSB, Cal Poly, or Pacific. Hence for these LA area schools it is at least more convenient for alumni to actually attend these games. So even though UCSB may have alumni passionate about the school and hoops team, we live a hundred or more miles away from the school and can't make an impact on attendance.
So UCSB is reliant on student & local population attendance, which for both groups, rises & falls with the team's record.

To answer your question about the population of IV, it has been a while since I've lived there so I'm really making a guess, but I believe it is about 15-20 thousand. And you are correct again in that a significant portion of the student population are City College students, I won't even try to make a guess at that #.
