Subject: WHA?! WE HAVE THE GIRLS!

*One thing for ya man - you must have not seen what Long Beach State has to offer in regards to WOMEN!!! What part of campus were you lingering on, and what time?!
YOU ARE SMOKIN SOMETHING IF YOU THINK YOU GUYS OUTDUE the BEACH WITH WOMEN. HAVE YOU BEEN TO A PARTY DOWN HERE DUDE? THERE ARE SOME MAJORLY HOT FOXES here at Long Beach State!!!

AND SECONDLY, DO NOT COMPARE OUR GIRLS WITH UCI. UCI DOES NOT HAVE ANY FOXY CHICKS. They are known for Medical School, dull social lives, English Department, and an overabundance of rice-mobiles (Hondas) - NOT FOR WOMEN AT ALL!

*Regarding academics - most of our schools do fall in the top half in the nation.
Long Beach State (AKA CSULB) has many high ranked programs in their respective disciplines - i.e. Criminology (one of the best in the nation), Communications (#8 in the nation, and indirectly resulting in the #5 Speech and Debate team in the NATION), Political Science, Psychology (HIGHLY REGARDED!), Kinesiology, Dance (extrememly competitive in admissions and #1 Dance Team in the nation last year), art, and highly regarded physical sciences (recently recieved a prestigious grant).

These strong points, and the fact that we have the MOST NUMBER OF HIGH SCHOOL VALEDICTORIANS STUDYING ON ANY CAMPUS IN CALIFORNIA - exceeding 300. And that is a FACT!

*Despite these things, I don't believe that they necessarily affect the Athletic Department.
What does is the Alumni support!
A great deal of our alumni - especially our student athletes (i.e. MISTY MAY) reside in the Long Beach Area, and support athletics when success is evident. For example - we have some of the most enthusiastic Women's Volleyball fans - considering we are regarded as a National Powerhouse with history and all.
The booster clubs are largely supported by Alumni, and without them, it would be difficult to keep things running smoothly.

Additionally, WE ARE NOT A COMMUTER SCHOOL.
LBSU might have been in the past, but that changed with time - especially this year, as most of the Freshman are from afar. This I suspect, has NO EFFECT on alumni support, yet has a direct effect on attendance.
Coach Morgan has reminded us time and time again that at Syracuse University (where he was the assistant coach under Jim Boeheim), the arena would top 30,000 (yes, 30 thousand!!!) at every homegame - mostly due to the fact that there's a lot LESS to do in Syracuse in the Winter (they're buried under a large coat of snow) than there is in Southern California. THAT IS A FACTOR WITHIN ITSELF!

Syracuse is a TRUE COLLEGE TOWN - WHERE THE WHOLE TOWN (AND I MEAN THE WHOLE CITY, INCLUDING THE NON-COLLEGE STUDENTS AND BASIC RESIDENTS)supports the University in Athletics.
I can't say the same about Isla Vista
- Sure they're majority college students in IV, but keep in mind that the majority of the Syracuse fans probably ARE NOT college students. They are THE WHOLE TOWN, PERIOD.
You can't say the same about Santa Barbara. The kids from Isla Vista fill the dome (occassionally), not the basic residents of Santa Barbara.
Therefore, the college town factor DOES NOT apply to our part of California. MOST SCHOOLS HERE DON'T HAVE THE SAME KIND OF COLLEGE TOWNS THAT THE SNOW FILLED EAST HAS.
If that REALLY factored in, you Gauchos would need a much LARGER ARENA. Get it? Occasionally filling a 5000 seat gym is not the same as cramming an entire town into a large arena.
IV may be a "sort of" college town in regards to percentage of students residing in it, yet that does not make it a TRUE COLLEGE TOWN IN THE ATHLETICS SENSE.

*Responding to the other posts - you guys are mostly correct about Alumni support. Utah State definately attracts the most spectators (it's pretty obvious, considering it's a given that in a location such as Utah, people don't have much else to do).
Long Beach State definately has to compete with the surrounding sports venues and teams
- but I wouldn't exactly include SC and UCLA. UCLA complains JUST AS MUCH about their lack of spectators and rowdiness at home games compared with those in the east.
And SC, well, I wouldn't exactly say that they always fill up the ancient L.A. Sports Arena every home game either.
Don't forget, we at THE BEACH have to compete with the World Champion L.A. Lakers - and that's an enormous task in itself.

All in all, we aren't doing to bad considering our competition in the L.A. Area.
As for alumni support - well, we have many successful programs here at the BEACH. That has to say something about alumni support. The Long Beach State alumni are a little less talked about, but don't be fooled - they're there - and they're proud to support their Alma Mater.

GO BEACH!!!
