...his eyes grew gentle, and the lighting effect subsided. He remained hovering far above her but the cloud trail spiralling around her began to uncoil and float back up to the torso which originated it. Then Toluse broke the silence and Cumulus whirled, eyes ablaze with lightening fury.

Aori's 'playmate' squawked as the ebon stranger cast forth his defense. Cloud-covered and naked fist alike sent twin bolts of electrical fury hurtling toward him. Time seemed to freeze for those assembled. And as Cumulus watched the look in Toluse's eyes shift from playfulness to dread, he realized in the transition that neither expression held malice. An empathy long ago forgotten returned, and he knew he was in fact attacking an innocent. He had decided never to do so again, though the price was his life and his...he struggled to remember what else he had lost even as he willed the bolts apart. Toluse was barely singed as death turned abruptly on either side of him.

Cumulus withdrew more of the clouds into himself, descending down to the level of the guardian and her companion. Tears streamed down his face as he whimpered. The sound of an infant crying through a grown man's husky baritone was an unsettling juxtaposition, and as he buried his head in his hands, it was uncertain how Aori and Toluse would respond...
