Subject: Pencil plant

Hey all! I got a Euphorbia pencil plant from a very dear friend. I think it's doing just fine, but does anyone have any specific info on it? This is one cool looking plant.

One of the few easy rooting Euphorbs, IMO. Mine is about four feet high now, and about five years old. They will bloom, but don't hold your breath. It is sooooo tiny I needed a magnifying glass to make sure it WAS a bloom! When they have plenty of water, they will have small leaves less than 3/4 of an inch long. As the plant dries so do the leaves, then they fall off. Either or, makes no difference to the plant.

This is one of the more toxic Euphorbias. The sap can cause problems with skin contact, and has been reported to be Not GOOD for the eyes. Any damage will cause the plant to weep white latex sap. Water will often stop the flow. Either dunk or spray.

Speaking of spraying, do NOT treat this plant with alcohol for mealies! Mine is potted in the top of a strawberry pot. I was madly spraying away, preventive maintenance for the plants in all the pockets. The next day I noticed the plant looks like it had been whitewashed... This light grey color will not scrub off even with a toothbrush and a bucket of water. Oh well.

I recently found one in the neighborhood I have lived in for 16 years, that I pass weekly and never knew it was there. The 'branches' are so thick on this plant I can't even describe it! The plant is at the faaaaaar corner of a gravel liquor store lot. I am SURE it gets no irrigation and we only get rain from November to April and not much at that. It was obvious that this tree had been backed into, hacked at, carved on, and was still making me proud to see it there, against all odds. Thick enough you could not see through to the other side!

Good luck and enjoy a most unusual plant.

Thank you, Cena. I've seen that whitish effect on a cereus cactus I put alcohol on. Lucky me it's going away.

You seem to know a lot about succulents and stuff. Could you tell me how often to water the pencil thingy? I have a trigona, would it want the same treatment as it? Do you know how cold a cereus cactus can tolerate? I've got one that I don't know where to put it if I bring it inside. If I keep it from freezing do you think it would be OK?

Thanks again. You're a real dear to help me out here.

I have had a pencil plant for about 10 years, and it is now quite tall and getting gangly looking, with many long offshoots that are starting to drag it down. I want to propagate it to make more plants but do not know how. It oozes white stuff when I cut a branch, which I understand can be toxic and to keep away from my eyes, but when I stuck a piece in water for a couple of weeks, nothing happened. Do I plant it in dirt? Any suggestions would be welcome. Many thanks.

Lisanne

Liz, all my cacti stay outside year round. I just move them out of the rain when it is cold.

If you have a garage you can move the cacti into it, watering some each month so it doesn't dry completely out. Light may be an issue but you are encouraging dormancy here and perhaps could get by with it. Unless the garage has windows too!

Some plants depending on how low your temps go, can just be moved up next to the house for warmth from the heat bleed of the structure.

I water mine thouroughly once a week. Seems about a half gallon each for mine, which are in multiplanted containers, strawberry pot and Mesa Planter.

Good luck and keep us posted.

I wanted to even out my pencil plant, so I trimmed it and sunk the ends in the dirt, hoping to propogate new stems. It doesn't seem to be working. 2 months later, most of them have gone floppy, then shrivelled up. Anybody have a clue how to root cuttings of this guy?

Thanks,

Paul

I have a pencil plant (4foot) and cut the lower stems and place in water mixed with Miracle-Gro Quick Start planting and transplanting starting solution. The cuttings stay in water for about two weeks and then transplant into pots and hanging baskets. Have had very good luck in the transplant and have not had any die. After the transplant be sure to water frequently and do not allow potting soil to dry. You will know it has made it when you see new growth of the tiny leafs. I live in Corpus Christi and this plant can grow very tall here. My neighbor has one that is at least 3 feet above her 6 foot tall fence. Mine sits in a large deep pot and is shaped into a tree standing straight up.

I stuck a piece with a node that broke off by accident right back in the same pot and it rooted.

I was recently given a pencil plant. it is so cool.
where I live it gets to freezing temps sometimes but not often usually low 40's upper 30's off and on. Can I plant my pencil plant outdoors? does it like sun or shade?
i'dlove to put it in the ground but was told it was a house plant exclusively. right now it's on my front porch with lots of shade and is growing little leaves. Thanks for any info you can give me.SAL

Hi: My office partner and I just acquired a pencil plant and know nothing about how to care for it. Any ideas? It is staked in a pot, by a window. Give us any thoughts you have. Thanks!
