Young people reject the new police plans
http://www.irishnews.com/archive2000/18122001/letters.html

THE students’ union of Coleraine university held its AGM last week.

As a member of this union, I decided to attend the AGM.

I was deeply intrigued by the motions on the agenda.

The first motion called for the appointment of another health and social welfare officer for the campus.

The motion was passed with no great fuss and rightly so.

The second motion was more contentious.

The motion called for the Students Union to state their disapproval at the new police force of Northern Ireland, as it is only a cover name for the “human rights abusers” of the RUC.

The strong wording of the motion provoked a call for an ammendment, yet this call was flatly rejected by most students present.

The motion stood and the vote was passed.

A clear majority voted in favour of stating their disapproval of the PSNI.

The government must listen to its young people.

Coleraine University is demographically diverse and contains a wide spectrum of students from different political backgrounds.

This fact proves that young people on both sides of the community are dissatisfied with the new policing arrangement.

Recent revelations of the RUC’s failure to act on information regarding Omagh, RUC collusion, the use of plastic bullets and countless human rights abuses must be rectified.

The students of Coleraine – and indeed much of Northern Ireland – have demonstrated through this vote that they want a police force that can represent all the community and which we can all feel a part of.

Obviously the PSNI does not go far enough.

Political leaders listen to us, we are the leaders of tomorrow.

Implement the Patten Report and give us a police force we can be proud of.

We are not fooled by the name change.

The young people have voiced our disapproval, please listen.

Ombudsman was clearly right
