The University of Ulster has ordered a high-level probe into 'whistleblower' allegations, it was announced today.

A former parliamentary commissioner for complaints has been called into conduct the "preliminary investigation".

In a brief public statement today, the university said the inquiry would examine matters raised under its Public Interest Disclosure Policy, drawn up to offer protection to staff making whistleblowing complaints.

The university gave no details of the matters being examined.

A spokesman said: "The University of Ulster has asked Sir Michael Buckley, the former UK Parliamentary Commissioner for Complaints and Health Service Commissioner, to conduct a preliminary investigation into matters raised under the university's Public Interest Disclosure Policy.

"Sir Michael expects to have a report completed by the middle of February," he added.

It's understood the investigation will look at allegations raised by a number of staff members.

Sir Michael carried out a high-profile probe into the Hinduja passport affair that brought down Northern Ireland Secretary Peter Mandelson.
