University Faces Top-Level Probe

By Alan Erwin, PA NEWS

Mon 10 Jan 2005

Management methods at the University of Ulster are to be investigated in a top-level probe, it emerged tonight.

Sir Michael Buckley, the former parliamentary ombudsman, has been brought in to examine whistleblowing allegations.

It was decided to bring in Sir Michael following an emergency sitting of the University’s governing council.

That meeting was called to discuss the future of vice-chancellor Professor Gerry McKenna.

With Prof McKenna absent on sick leave and sabbatical for the last two months, up to 30 members of the ruling authority gathered at the Jordanstown campus near Belfast on Friday in a bid to end the uncertainty.

Sources at Ireland’s largest university, where 28,000 students are enrolled, stressed that the inquiry will focus on style of management.

Sir Michael, who handled the Hinduja passport affair which led to the resignation of former Northern Ireland Secretary Peter Mandelson, will assess matters raised under the University’s public interest disclosure policy in a preliminary investigation beginning on Monday.

A spokesman added: “He expects to have a report completed on these matters by the middle of February.”
